You find a wallpaper you love online. The colors look perfect, the pattern feels right, and you can already picture the finished room.
So, should you order the rolls?
Not quite yet.
Before committing to a full wallpaper order—or several yards of fabric—there’s one simple step we almost always recommend: order a sample first.
It may feel like an extra step when you’re excited to get a project started, but seeing a material in your actual space can answer questions that even the best product photography cannot.
And for designers working with clients, samples can make the selection and approval process much easier.
A Screen Can’t Show You Everything
We spend a lot of time making sure our product photography represents our wallpapers and fabrics as accurately as possible. But every screen is different, and every room is different too.
A warm living room in Southern California at 4 PM is going to show a color differently than a north-facing bedroom on an overcast morning.
Even the same wallpaper can change throughout the day.
That soft blue you noticed online might become slightly grayer in your space. A warm cream may pick up tones from nearby wood flooring. A detailed pattern that looks delicate on a screen may have much more presence once you see its actual scale.
That isn’t a problem with the material.
It’s simply what happens when color, light, scale, and surrounding finishes come together.
A sample lets you see that relationship before you make the larger investment.
What Should You Look for in a Wallpaper Sample?
Don’t look at your sample for thirty seconds and make a decision.
Live with it for a little while.
Place it on the wall where you’re considering installing the wallpaper. Then come back to it at different times of day.
Look at it in:
- morning light
- direct and indirect daylight
- evening light
- your normal artificial lighting
Then step back.
How does the pattern work with the size of the room? How does it relate to your flooring, cabinetry, furniture, artwork, and textiles?
If you’re comparing several wallpapers, place the samples in the same location rather than comparing them separately on a computer screen.
You may be surprised by which one feels right once it’s actually in the room.
Fabric Is Even More Tactile
With fabric, seeing the color is only part of the decision.
You want to touch it.
The weight, weave, texture, softness, and way a fabric interacts with light can be just as important as the pattern itself.
If you’re considering fabric for curtains, cushions, an accent chair, or another interior application, hold the sample next to the other materials you plan to use.
Does it work with the wallpaper?
Does the texture complement the upholstery already in the room?
Does the color still feel right next to your wood, stone, or paint?
These are small questions before an order—and potentially expensive questions afterward.
For Designers, Samples Make Client Decisions Easier
If you’re an interior designer, decorator, architect, or other trade professional, you already know how different a material conversation becomes once there is something physical on the table.
Instead of asking a client to imagine how a wallpaper will look based on a laptop screen, you can show them.
You can place wallpaper next to paint chips, stone, wood, and fabric. You can build a material palette. You can compare alternatives in the actual project environment.
And perhaps most importantly, the client can experience the material rather than simply looking at a photograph of it.
That makes samples useful not only for selecting products, but also for communicating a design concept.
Sample First. Order Second.
Wallpaper and fabric can completely change the character of a room, so there is no reason to rush the selection.
If you’ve found something you love at Callista Home, you don’t need to commit immediately to full rolls or the complete fabric quantity for your project.
Start with a sample.
Bring it into the room.
Look at it in your lighting.
Touch it.
Pair it with the materials you already have.
Give yourself—or your client—the opportunity to be certain.
Wallpaper and fabric samples can be ordered directly from Callista Home, and samples typically arrive within 2–5 business days.
Once you’ve found the right material, you can return to order the full wallpaper rolls or fabric quantity needed for your project.
